While assembling the content for Foundation For Disciples, there were many decisions to make about what to include and what not to include. Those decisions were guided by these goals:
-
Provide key information for new and young disciples (young in the Lord, not necessarily young in age).
-
Provide the key concepts and Scriptures about following Christ.
-
Be a useful tool for mentors to walk new/young disciples through, but also be something new/young disciples could read themselves, or refer back to.
-
Warn against many misconceptions that Christians in the U.S. tend to fall into (consumerism, lack of dedication, thinking difficulties will go away, etc.).
-
Curate and vet a list of videos for new/young disciples, so they can learn through a familiar medium.
-
Focus on all the good reasons to live the way God wants us to, instead of creating a list of obligations that should be followed.

Backstory: When I first became a Christian I was taught in the same way I think a lot of new disciples are: "Oh, you're a Christian now? Here's a list of all of the things you should do." And I spent a good portion of my Christian life doing things out of obligation. One by one, God has been showing me (and convincing me of) the great reasons He has given us to live for Him out of gratitude, joy, and hope. This has made a huge difference in my walk with Jesus. Several of the discipleship booklets I've seen tend to be more about the list of things we should do. Instead, here we've tried to make it more about why it makes so much sense to live the way Jesus wants us to. The great paradox of following Jesus is that even though we must sometimes walk through difficult valleys, Jesus' way is full of joy, hope, peace, purpose, and fulfillment (see Matthew 11:28-30).
